Zichron Menachem UK, a leading charity supporting young cancer patients in Israel, held its Summer Cut event in London.
The bi-annual event which encourages hair donations was a heartwarming success, bringing together families for a life-changing cause.
Thirty-eight girls and one boy donated hair to create wigs for cancer patients aged under 25 who have lost their hair due to treatment. Each girl donated at least 30cm. Participants came from across the UK. Families whose elder children had participated brought younger siblings to donate hair.
A new feature, the ‘Braids of Hope’ board, allowed donors to affix hair post-cut, symbolising their commitment. Participants enjoyed a day filled with activities including a bouncy castle, glitter tattoos, nail art and makeup sessions. Snacks were provided and each participant received a commemorative hoodie. Emotional support was extended to all family members.
Hanako Ehrenberg’s three daughters, Sara (10), Shira (7), and Mira (5), had their first haircuts at the event. Despite initial concerns, Hanako helped her daughters understand the significance. Sara donated 60cm.
Mirielle Shiers, who had been growing her hair for over a year, donated her hair and also fundraised for the charity. At Chanukah, she sold items at a local fete.
“I wanted to do something for charity,” she said. “When I found out about Zichron Menachem, I knew immediately this was the perfect way to make a difference.”
Miriam Begal noted, “I volunteer at every haircutting event to be part of an incredible atmosphere. Seeing such selflessness gives me a boost for weeks. It is remarkable to see young children excited to give their hair. Zichron Menachem has created happy givers and happy receivers.”
The donated hair will be crafted into wigs, providing comfort and confidence to young cancer patients in Israel and the UK. Funds raised support various programmes, including medical information, second opinions through the “Clinic of Hope,” and breaks from medical appointments for parents and children.
Eli Seliger, Zichron CEO, said. “We are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support. It is truly inspiring to see the compassion and dedication of everyone involved.”
Zichron Menachem collaborates with Israel’s top medical professionals, underscoring the essential support the charity provides for comprehensive cancer treatment for children.
