A leading City lawyer has joined one of the capital’s fastest-growing business law firms.

Jonathan Metliss has been appointed Chairman of Axiom Stone, the growing multi-service practice, with offices in Mayfair, Edgware and Birmingham.

The practice represents London, national and international clients and has gained a strong reputation with repeat business based on trusted advice and personable client relationships.

Jonathan, one of the City’s best-known and most distinguished lawyers, has had a long and successful legal career.

He specialises in corporate finance with an emphasis on takeovers, acquisitions, financings, flotations and joint ventures, with particular expertise in the real estate, retail and leisure and technology sectors.

A founding partner of City law firm S.J. Berwin in 1982, over the years he has been involved in some of the UK’s largest corporate transactions, including:

  • British Land’s £1.17bn acquisition of The Broadgate Estate
  • British Land’s acquisition of the Meadowhall Shopping Centre,
  • Sheffield
  • Acquisition of Adidas by Robert Louis-Dreyfus and Maurice Saatchi
  • Disposal of the interest of Joe Lewis in Christies
  • Pentland’s acquisition of Speedo Group
  • Privatisation of Pentland
  • Takeovers of Tottenham Hotspur FC in the early 1980s and 2000

Jonathan has held a number of non-executive directorships, including that of ENIC, which acquired Tottenham Hotspur, and General Medical Clinics.

In addition, he has held many consultancies including to Nexus Investment Ventures, part of Harry Hyman’s Nexus Group. He is currently a consultant to First Regional Accounting, a business combining small accountancy firms.

Jonathan is also a Governor of The Technion in Haifa, Israel’s Institute of Technology, and Chairman of Action Against Discrimination, a charity he established to combat racism in sport – in particular, football. He does much charitable work and for many years was a trustee of The Langdon Foundation assisting children with special needs.

He has been actively involved in Jewish community and Israeli-related affairs for many years. He is currently a member of the defence committee of The Board of Deputies of British Jews.
